It was US President Calvin Coolidge, who said "it takes a great man to be a good listener".
So Richard believes it's important to talk to people on the ground, who know what's going on. He likes to hear the concerns and viewpoints of others, so that he is effective in his roles as a Councillor and Conservative activist.

Richard is a member of the Police Authority, and is a former member of the County Durham and Darlington Fire Authority. He attends Police liaison meetings where he brings the concerns of the public to the attention of the Police.
Richard likes to get out and about to Village Carnivals, Agricultural Shows and Country Fairs.
As well as providing a fun day out for the family, they are a great way of keeping in touch with what's going on. And sometimes it's a good opportunity to 'buttonhole' government ministers and tell them how they should be running the country!
